Because of my various writing jobs, I read a lot of movie reviews and TV recaps and one of the most well-reviewed movies of 2009 is Grey Gardens, which will premiere Sunday night on HBO and then be replayed throughout the spring.
The movie’s set-up is different from any I’ve seen. It stars Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange as an eccentric (tremendous understatement) mother-daughter combination featured in a 1976 documentary. Gardens doesn’t just re-hash the movie, but explores some of the things that we didn’t see and provides more depth to the critically-acclaimed doc. Moreover, it explores the relationship between a controlling mother and her daughter, which seems to be a theme that continues to be very relevant as we creep towards 2010.
Before the movie has even premiered, the LA Times is already asking who, between Barrymore and Lange, are more likely to receive the Emmy for Best Actor in a Made For TV Movie.
Give Grey Gardans a chance and let us know what you think.
