During the promotion of new film Invention of Lying, Ricky Gervais left the door open for the revival of Extras.
Sky News spoke to the creator of Extras and The Office…
“The reason I’d like to do Extras again is because whenever I go to an awards ceremony like the Golden Globes or the Emmys, just ridiculous people come up to me and say they’d like to do Extras and I phone up Steve [Merchant] and say, ‘Oh man, you’ll never guess who wants to be in Extras now’.”
The block quote above means that Gervais unquestionably has ideas for the show, but he’s now an international movie star who has the creative ability to write and direct completely original films (like the Invention of Lying).
In my opinion, Gervais is wise to leave the possibility of an Extras revival open because it leaves fans of the show optimistic and, if his movies don’t do as well as expected, Gervais always has something to fall back on.
And just because he has ideas and a huge demand for the show doesn’t mean he would (or should) go back and do it.
What do you think?
