Devon Allman’s Honeytribe headlines Cedar Ridge Vineyards SummerFest
By Ric Holmquest
The first installment of the Cedar Ridge Vineyards, Winery and Distillery’s 2012 SummerFest Concert Series starts tonight (5/25) and continues through Sunday (5/27). The three days of live music, specialty food and award winning wines will feature the music of Devon Allman’s Honeytribe, OSG, The Fez and Nikki Lunden.
Kicking off the Vineyard’s SummerFest on Friday evening is Iowa City’s OSG. The hot new nine-piece soul, R&B and funk band is Oh So Good! Sexy and sophisticated, tenderized and roasted to perfection, OSG oozes funky juice and hip-hop soulful sweetness. Seth May provides the lead guitars and vocals, with Margaret Larson and Katie Robbins out front adding vocals, panache and stylish swagger. OSG comes complete with horn section and percussionist Creighton Gaynor .
Nikki Lunden will open for Devon Allman’s Honeytribe on Saturday.
The high energy singer-songwriting stick of dynamite will perform solo acoustic. Lunden previously fronted the popular Iowa City bands Heinous Canis and The Trollies. Nikki recently released her fourth solo studio recording, Depends On The Weather, on her own Angry Butterfly Productions label. Lunden will be leaving the Eastern Iowa music scene this fall for Los Angeles, to attend the Musicians Institute.
Devon Allman is the son of blues rock icon Gregg Allman. Devon Allman’s Honeytribe has been opening selected dates this spring for his legendary father’s Allman Brother’s Band. Devon Allman’s Honeytribe recordings include: Torch, released in 2006 on the Livewire record label and Space Age Blues, released in 2010 on the Provogue record label.
Devon Allman has been splitting his time recently between his own Honeytribe power trio and also performing with the new southern rock super-group Royal Southern Brotherhood. Billed as the Soul of the South, the Brotherhood includes Grammy Award winning southern soul singer Cyril Neville, the Gulf Coast style guitars of Mike Zito and Devon Allman’s lead guitars and vocals. Local blues enthusiasts will remember Mike Zito from his main-stage performance at the 2009 LCBS Bluesmore.
The Memorial weekend installment of SummerFest will be capped off when KCCK Radio 88.3 “All that Jazz” presents a Sunday evening performance by the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids Steely Dan tribute band, The Fez. The 15-piece All Star ensemble is composed of some of the finest musicians in Eastern Iowa, all dedicated to faithfully reproducing the jazz rock fusion masterpieces of Steely Dan. The Fez features the vocals of Loren Lange, the twin lead guitars of Andy Parrot and Seth May, Ben Franklin behind the drum kit, a four piece horn section, three backup singers, two keyboardists and one of the best rhythm sections around.
The SummerFest Concert Series will continue July 6 to 8 with “Bourbon and Blues.”
Cedar Ridge proprietor and Master Winemaker Jeff Quint says “our newly constructed event pavilion is the perfect venue for enjoying great music, great food and award-winning locally-produced wines in the heart of the Corridor”. General manager Jamie Siefken shares “the Cedar Ridge family is thrilled to introduce this new series of events” adding “besides the great music all weekend, we will be featuring our crowd-pleasing wood fired pizzas, local meats and cheeses and a specialty barbeque menu.”
