Going in to a concert some have very high expectations and then end up being let down. With Joe Nichols and Phil Vassar that was not the case during the KHAK Birthday Bash in downtown Cedar Rapids this weekend.

Both lived up to all expectations of great music and great fun. What I loved about Vassar was his great stage presence. He played with the crowd and had a great time throughout his set.

Vassar performed great songs such as “I’m alright”, “Six pack summer”, “Just another day in paradise”, and “My next thirty years.” He didn’t miss a beat and had the audience in his hand singing along to every word.

The best part of Vassar’s performance was when he pulled out the KHAK crew and sat down at his piano and sang, “Sing us a song you’re the Piano man, sing us a song tonight. Well were all in the mood for a melody and you’ve got us feeling alright” Of course that is from Billy Joel’s “Piano Man.” Being close to the stage got everyone in the mood and made for a great ending to Vassar’s performance.

Nichols is a great country singer who knows how to put on a great show. He got up close to you and, I think, at one point he even looked at me while I took his photograph (see gallery below).

Nichols played crowd favorites such as, “Brokenheartsville”, “What’s a guy gotta do”, “Size matters” and “Tequila makes her clothes fall off”.

He also played one of his bests “The Impossible” which is such as great song. During that one I looked among the thousands of people in downtown and saw them all dancing and having a great time.

It was such a great way to kick off the summer in downtown Cedar Rapids.
