It’s hot outside in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and Eastern Iowa but that doesn’t mean there aren’t fun things to do in the next several days. Below we highlight a few fun indoor events away from 90-degree temperatures.
Free admission to Cedar Rapids Museum of Art – Admission will be free for all visitors July 5 through September 2, 2012.
Tinsley Ellis – Hard-rocking blues-soaked guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Tinsley Ellis sings and plays with the energy and soul of all the great Southern musicians who have come before him. Ellis attacks his music with rock power and blues feeling, following in the tradition of Deep South musical heroes Duane Allman, Freddie King, Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes.
“The Woman in Black” – Yes, this play is based on the same book as the recent movie starring Daniel Radcliffe. It’s a bone-chilling mystery of the imagination, especially notable for having only two actors—and one ghost—perform the entire play.
Kevin Gordon – Kevin Gordon’s voice is made from dust and red clay. And the songs on the Louisiana-born performer’s sweeping new album “Gloryland” are chiseled from the bedrock of life — the honest facts of rambling, needing, loving, soul-searching and experience.
Spacetacular! – A day of events about space exploration and science discovery! Kids planetarium shows. Screening of “Apollo 13″, Special guest presentations by Prof. Donald Gurnett and Space-historian and author Andrew Chaikin. For the whole family!
“Shirley Valentine” – A comic drama by Willy Russell. Tired of talking to the walls of her kitchen, Shirley takes a trip to Greece searching for a spark of life in her otherwise bland existence. What she discovers is that the old Shirley – who loved life and wasn’t afraid to live it – was there all along. Rated Theatre R for adult content.
Victor Wooten + Uniphonics – Wooten, now a five-time Grammy winner, hit the worldwide scene in 1990 as a founding member of the super-group Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Continuing to blaze a musical trail with the band, Victor has also become widely known for his own Grammy nominated solo recordings and tours.
