If Father Bluegrass and Mother Swing Soul Singing had a love child, it would be Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys. The band combines musicianship, writing and vocals without sacrificing a thing. With an energy and vigor that permeates each note and the ability to get audiences moving and grooving everywhere they go, they’ve found their niche with an old sound in a new generation.
Lindsay Lou’s lyrics and vocals bring a powerful quality to some timeless traditional American music. Her writing style closely matches the different mix of genres while maintaining a uniqueness that’s a breath of fresh air in today’s music. Her clever, moving lyrics lure in crowds of all ages, and she speaks from the heart with a genuineness that’s so approachable, you’ll feel like old friends after a single listen.
The band members that make up the Flatbellys are as unique as their backgrounds. Comprised of a biologist, a school teacher, an engineer, a law student and a businessman nicknamed “Huggy Bear,” these self-taught musical entrepreneurs each stumbled upon bluegrass in their own corners of the Great Lakes state of Michigan, then fortunately stumbled upon each other.
You don’t need to be a lover of bluegrass picking to enjoy an evening with Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys. This group has converted many a layman to the deeply rooted world of bluegrass and folk music. All over the country new fans are walking out of Flatbellys shows saying, “huh, I didn’t think I liked bluegrass music.” They’re creating their own genre and are calling it Lou-Grass. Their musicianship may make you want to stop in awe, but good luck, the Flatbellys have a groove that’s sure to move you.
