Brewed Cafe will celebrate its grand opening on Thursday in New Bohemia.

CEDAR RAPIDS – Brewed Café opened quietly on July 14 at 1101 Third St. SE, on the first floor of the CSPS building in the New Bohemia District.

Today, though, it is ready to celebrate. The new cafe, owned by the same Marsceau family who owns Brewed Awakenings at 1271 First Ave. SE, is marking today with a grand opening.

In some ways, the cafe is an extension of the First Avenue location, with the same attention to local and organic ingredients, mouth-melting pastries and focus on crafted espresso drinks (the cafe makes its own vanilla syrup and chai).

But the new location isn’t a carbon copy. All you have to do is walk through the front doors to see that. The new cafe has a more sophisticated, urban vibe with rough hewn wood and metal accents.

The food and beverage offerings are different, too. Brewed has been running the Carlo concessions bar for the CSPS Hall upstairs since 2011. So the new cafe also offers beer — beers on tap represent Midwest microbreweries — and wine.

At breakfast, in addition to the breads, pastries and other baked goods made in house or down the street at Brewed Awakenings, the cafe serves quiche, house-made granola, vegan and gluten-free breakfast cookies and hard boiled eggs.

For lunch, served daily between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., there’s an array of salads, soups and sandwiches all fresh, local and largely organic, including prosciutto sandwiches with basil chevre, hummus wraps with Greek dressing and vegan soups. Watch the website for daily specials.

For dinner, the cafe serves cheese plates, flat breads, spring rolls and one daily dinner special that’s available between 5 and 9 p.m., along with the regular lunch options. Dinner specials debuted last week with “picket-fence braised lamb,” cornbread Rehberg pork roulade and Mediterranean quinoa salad.
