IOWA CITY – Matt & Kim and Grand Funk Railroad will co-headline the 2012 University of Iowa Homecoming concert at the Pentacrest Lawn on  Sept.  28 immediately following the Homecoming parade. This event is free and open to the public.

Rousing audiences into mass dance parties with only drums and a keyboard, New York City indie poppers Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino have catapulted from humble Brooklyn beginnings to hard-earned international stardom. Their spunky, groove-heavy aesthetic, vividly demonstrated on hits like “Cameras” and “Daylight,” is as infectiously danceable as it is catchy. Despite having been featured on a variety of commercials and television shows, Matt & Kim have remained true to the bubbly and fun-focused attitude they’ve been spreading since their conception in 2005. With the release of new album Lightning approaching in the fall, this “quintessential party band” will rocking the Pentacrest for the 100th anniversary of Homecoming.

Joining them is Grand Funk Railroad, a band that has sold out stadiums faster than The Beatles and have helped to define American classic rock since their inception in 1969.  The Flint, Mich.-bred group behind anthems like “We’re An American Band,” “Some Kind of Wonderful,” and “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home)” will continue the tradition of soulful, blues-inspired rock whose timeless appeal and unmatched staying power will delight Hawkeye fans old and new. Grand Funk Railroad features founding members Don Brewer and Mel Schacher joined by veterans Max Carl (38 Special), Bruce Kulick (KISS), and Tim Cashion (Bob Seger).

SCOPE Productions produces the Homecoming concert and others at the Iowa Memorial Union through the academic year.
