Mark Patterson was the CEO of Eco Lips from September 2008 through August 2012. Mark died on Saturday, August 11th, 2012 at the age of 34 from an aortic aneurysm leaving behind his wife Sarah and 3 young children. Mark knew his bikes, balms and beers well. In 2004, Mark biked from Cedar Rapids to San Francisco visiting micro breweries along the way. He kept an on-line journal during this time noting all the kindnesses that were shown to him on his journey. These experiences made Mark more aware than ever of the importance of helping others in need and because he knew this could be done while having a good time, the annual B3 fundraiser at Eco Lips was born.
According to Mark, “B3 stands for Bikes, Balm and Beer, three things that we are passionate about in Cedar Rapids.”
This year, the B3 event goes back towards its roots in an effort to help Mark’s family attain the goals he had set for his children, Luke (7), Elizabeth (7), and Lily (3). Steve Shriver, Eco Lips founder and current CEO, shared a line from Mark’s personal mission statement, “I will work to inspire those around me to reach their full potential.” Steve is quick to note that this was one of principles which made Mark successful at work as well as in his home life, “Mark was a rock, he provided the sole income for his family. As time passes, it is easy for us to forget the everyday challenges that Sarah and the children face as well as the challenges to come years down the road.”
