Halloween events, the opening of NewBo City Market and more

There are more than 230 fun things to do this weekend in Eastern Iowa, including 25 live music shows. Many of you will be celebrating with the many Halloween events too. Below we highlight our bets bets for the weekend. What will you be doing?

Friday

Landlocked Film Festival – Runs all weekend: A competitive festival celebrating its 6th birthday in October 2012, Landlocked presents independent movies from around the world. Thousands of audience members gather in Iowa City’s historic downtown to watch diverse films, from two minutes to two hours long.

Brewnost - International beers from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Germany, United Kingdom, Belgium and elsewhere paired with hors d’oeuvres; wine and liquor tasting; non-alcoholic cider and root beer; live music; silent auction.

Patton Oswalt - As a comedian, Patton Oswalt has shot four TV specials and has four critically acclaimed albums, including his latest Finest Hour, which was released on September 20, 2011 and received a Grammy nomination for “Best Comedy Album,” as well as a Showtime one-hour special of the same name. In 2009, Patton received his first Grammy nomination for his album My Weakness Is Strong.

John Carpenter’s “Halloween” 1978 - This fall, Compass International Pictures, Trancas International Films, and Screenvision turn back the clock to October 1978 in the sleepy town of Haddonfield, Illinois for John Carpenter’s immortal classic, Halloween. This nationwide release is the widest the film has seen since originally shocking audiences in ’78, and will be presented in a striking new HD transfer and 5.1 audio.

Saturday

NewBo City Market Grand Opening - With 18,000-square-feet of indoor space for 25 local year-round permanent vendors selling everything from floral arrangements and vegetables to breads, herbs, coffee, pasta and eggs, the market will be a new entertainment destination in the heart of Cedar Rapids’ New Bohemia neighborhood.

Muddy Monster Cross Country Run - The Muddy Monster cross country run is more than just your ordinary road race! It is a journey that allows the common athlete to achieve personal goals, enjoy what nature has to offer, take a step back in history, and participate in Halloween fun.

The Costume Run - Sponsored by Theatre Cedar Rapids & NewBo City Market, The Costume Run is co-presented by two Third Street nonprofits that hope to make an annual tradition of this interactive and theatrical twist on the traditional 5K fun run/walk.

NewBo Bash - Spicy Fresh Fun! Music and dancing, featuring Orchesta Alto Maiz, food and drink by NewBo Market Merchants, salsa recipe contest, door prizes and gifts. Cost: $60 per person or $40 for NewBo City Market Friends

Sunday

Simon Estes Concert - Through a collaborative effort of the Monticello and Anamosa Rotary clubs, Simon Estes will perform at 2PM on Sunday, October 28th in the Monticello High School Gym.

Circle of Ash: The Haunt - ‘The Haunt‘ is the bread and butter of what you expect when visiting a haunted house in October. This show is our high intensity, fast paced, adrenaline-pumping, scream soliciting, fear inspiring haunted attraction!

P.B. and the Jam - Jam up and jelly tight with the Twin Cities hottest melding of jazz funk fusion! Parlor City Pub and Eatery is the Sunday place to be!
