Legion Arts launches its First Friday series this week at CSPS with an artist reception for Pieta Brown’s photography exhibit as well as short films by local filmmaker Sam Fathallah from 5 to 7 pm. Pieta and Sam will both be present.
Pieta’s exhibit of photographs in the Commons Gallery through February is called Boulevard & Wires. The Iowa singer-songwriter took the photos during recent tours. Some appear in the album artwork of new releases by her father Greg Brown and step-mother Iris Dement.
“First Fridays are a beloved tradition in many cities, especially those with vibrant arts districts,” Legion Art executive director F. John Herbert said. “Now, with the blossoming of the New Bohemia, and an increasing number of arts-friendly venues in the neighborhood, it seems like a good time to adopt it here.”
The first Friday of each month CSPS will feature at least one new exhibit in the galleries, along with selected films, music, live performances, snacks and a cash bar. The events are free and open to all.
“Other galleries, restaurants and businesses will also be open, both at CSPS and the surrounding district,” Herbert said. “We hope that eventually all these businesses can coordinate events and produce some kind of joint calendar, but right now our aspirations are more modest.”
CSPS is located at 1103 Third St. SE, Cedar Rapids. For more info call 319-364-1580 or visit www.legionarts.org.
