Leon Russell performs at the Englert Theatre on Aug. 30. (Facebook)

Legendary Leon Russell is a musical chameleon, performing with a who’s who of rock ‘n’ roll over his 50-year career. The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, the Beach Boys, The Byrds, Marvin Gaye and the names keep rolling.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2011. Born in southwest Oklahoma in 1942, Russell began piano lessons at age 4 and hit the Tulsa nightclubs at 14.

After high school, his band, The Starlighters, hit the road with Jerry Lee Lewis. He headed to the L.A. club scene at 17 and became one of the best session musicians in Hollywood.

He’s won Grammys with George Harrison and Willie Nelson, and was nominated for his work with Elton John. We like the company he keeps.

Leon Russell performs at 8 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Englert Theatre in Iowa City. Tickets are $30 in advance and $32 the day of the show. More information here or at Englert.org.
