morrissey condones suicide

Posted on 29 November 2009 by e.vandril

Morrissey, the writer of hundreds of songs that speak to depressed individuals as a solo artist and with The Smiths, recently said that he thinks suicide is honorable.

He said so in during an interview on BBC Radio 4 program “Desert Island Discs” with Kirsty Young.  While discussing his life and the songs that he has written throughout his life, the conversation turned to death. Young asked: “Have you thought about being in control of your death? Have you thought about shuffling off this mortal coil at a time of your choosing?”

Morrissey responded with: “Yes I have. Yes I have, and I think self destruction is honorable. I always thought was. It’s an act of great control and I understand people who do it.”

As numerous writers have written over the last 20 years, Morrissey has a tremendous amount of pull over his legions of fans.  It doesn’t seem like The Smiths have that many fans to the average kid growing up in the Midwest, but Morrissey records are often a soundtrack to people going through depression and hardship.  Especially in the UK.

So if Morrissey says that he thinks suicide is honorable, I think it’s a really big deal and I foresee the day when at least one fan kills themselves because Morrissey said it was OK.
