I wrote a post about five months ago about Patrick Swayze’s battle with cancer.
I treated it like kind of a throw-away piece, just giving the basic facts and saying that I hoped he got better from it. I didn’t expect anything from the post, really, because I’ve never actually seen Swayze act in a movie, but a bunch of people commented on the story. All wished Swayze a speedy recovery and some even addressed their comments directly to Swayze, which I found kind of shocking.
It seems kind of ridiculous to address a comment to an actor whose time is spent battling cancer and not reading blog posts about his cancer. But as I thought more and more about the comments readers made to and about Swayze, I found myself, in a weird way, rediscovering the kindness of ordinary people.
It’s a nice gesture to take the time out of your day to write that they really like an actors work and hope he recovers from his illiness. It doesn’t seem like a big deal, but it is.
Everyone always says that Iowans are some of the nicest people in the country, and after reading some of the remarks readers on this site have left, I believe that.
