CEDAR RAPIDS – The Republic of China’s consulate general in Chicago will lead a list of dignitaries for the grand opening of an upscale Chinese restaurant today in Cedar Rapids.

Jiamen Restaurant opened Feb. 16 at 5400 Edgewood Road NE, featuring authentic Chinese chefs and a design theme based on China’s famous terra-cotta warriors. A ribboncutting is scheduled for 5 p.m. today.

The restaurant is the second opened in Cedar Rapids by Kong Bin Ni, following the success of his Osaka Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar at 5001 First Ave. SE, Suite 104.

“We were extremely busy for the entire first week,” said Duane Schmidt, who developed the building for the restaurant.

Consulate General Huang Ping of the People’s Republic of China accepted Jiamen’s invitation to perform a ribbon-cutting. Schmidt said the event is being termed an “obicutting,” because obi is a word for sash in China.

Siva Yam, president of the U.S.-China Chamber of Commerce, also is expected to attend the ceremony and a dinner for state and local dignitaries.

The restaurant offers seating for nearly 190.

Food was very good, and service was good too. But not at first. I understand the restaurant is new, and it will be busy for some time, but our wait was ridiculous. We made a reservation, and yet we still had to wait for an hour to get our table. The hostesses were grumpy, and kept saying it would only be a few more minutes. They told us this numerous times, and ‘a few minutes’ turned into a half hour at least.

Plus their rug was spelled wrong. Ridiculous.
    It’s innovative. Not innovatve!!!

Hi – the prices are way too high for this kind of food. Lunch was over $18.00 just for food and tea. How can you charge $5.00 for Tea? I don’t get the attraction, maybe because it is new. I would say at this price range it will not last long.

Incredible! I love Asian cuisine and this experience was outstanding. The appetizers were out of this world. The entree my friend and I had were excellent. The wine I had was lovely. It is very exciting to have a restaurant like this in Cedar Rapids!

My wife and I saw the chef (at least a guy in a chef’s hat) outside the back door having a cigarette the other week. Of course, everyone is entitled to their vices, but could it have been done out of the view of oncoming customer traffic? Needless to say, it looked tacky and we drove on.
