Cork n’ Fork
For many years I have heard tales of the Cork’n Fork Deli’n Grill. Apparently Cork’n Fork is true nostalgia for anyone that’s been around the Cedar Rapids area for a while, so I figured I’d better see what all the fuss was about.The restaurant is set back a bit on Mount Vernon Road. You’ll spot the sign right away and then you see the inviting green awning. I’m not quite sure what purpose the little green tent serves but I assume it just wouldn’t be Cork’n Fork without it.
Cork’n Fork is casual dining at its best. It’s an intimate little deli with worn booths that have seen many rowdy crowds and fitful children. When you walk in an enormous board with seemingly hundreds of sandwiches and salads greets you. I spent a few stunned moments just trying to wrap my head around the selection and finally chose whatever seemed the most unique.
Scotty’s sandwich is a tenderloin on toasted rye bread with tomato, onions, avocado and mayo. I must admit I would have never considered putting avocado on a tenderloin but it really worked. The fresh creaminess of the avocado lightened up the deep fried goodness of the tenderloin so it all balanced nicely.
Of course, ‘nostalgia’ for me means fried cheese balls, which were extra crisp and oozing melty cheese. Apparently ‘nostalgia’ for my husband means a giant cheeseburger smothered in barbecue sauce and bacon. To each his or her own. We both enjoyed our dinner heartily.
Cork’n Fork also serves breakfast, which I’m anxious to get back and try. The place has been around for years and they definitely have the right formula figured out. Friendly service plus a vast and yummy menu equals success.
