Patriotic Pops concert at Kirkwood canceled

Tonight’s Patriotic Pops concert at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids has been canceled, said Russ Oviatt, director of marketing and operations for the Freedom Festival.

“The weather is too unpredictable and the ground is already too soft,” Oviatt said. The decision was made around 8:45 a.m.

Concert night was to begin at 6 p.m. with music by Janelle Lauer, followed by the Cedar Rapids Symphony/Orchestra Iowa and fireworks.

About 450 tickets were sold in advance and are non-refundable, Oviatt said. “We still incur costs so we have to make sure the tickets stay sold. It states that on the ticket.

The concert has “typically been a walk-up, buy-at-the-gate type of event,,” he said, and has been attracting about 2,500 to 3,500 audience members the past few years.

The concert will not be rescheduled, Oviatt said, and the fireworks will be rolled into the July 4 fireworks display.
