’24′ officially canceled

A couple weeks ago, I wrote on this site that 24 was on the brink of cancellation after eight seasons as one of TV’s most beloved shows.

As the end of 24 inched closer and closer, there were numerous attempts to keep the series alive.  Fox was reportedly shopping 24 to multiple networks, reportedly sparking serious interest from NBC.  But the NBC deal fell through and 24 was officially canceled at the end of last week.

Series director/producer Jon Cassar broke the cancellation news on his Twitter account.

News from the 24 set,the crew has been told that 24 has come to an end. There will b no season 9. Its been a great run, thanx all 4 watching

Though this will be the final season of 24, don’t be surprised if a 24 movie is released within the next year. The show has always been set-up to do a movie with Kiefer Sutherland familiarly playing Jack Bauer and now it looks like 20th Century Fox will finally get to put Sutherland on the big screen.

While this is sad news for fans of 24, things more-than-likely won’t be coming to and end any time soon.

’24′ will end in 2010

In the middle of its eighth season, Fox announced Wednesday that the current season will 24′s last.

Hint of the news leaked on the Internet Tuesday night and now, Wednesday afternoon, the guillotine has dropped. The Kiefer Sutherland-starring program will end after eight more episodes because of decreased ratings and rising costs.

But the good thing for 24 fans is that there have been serious talks of making a feature film to properly wrap things up.  So yes, it’s unfortunate 24 is going off the air because it represents the end of a beloved television show, but now, it won’t be a dissatisfying exit.  At least I don’t think it will be.

For more about the end of 24 and how the events of 9/11 made it so popular at the beginning of its run, please read Time magazine’s blog post about the show.

’24′ nearing an end

Brace yourself 24 fans because the eight-year Fox staple might be coming to an end soon.

Mary Lynn Rajskub, who plays computer whiz Chloe O’Brien, recently said in an interview that she doesn’t feel 24 has much longer left.

“I definitely think the end is in sight, but having said that, I don’t know if it’s going to be this year. I’m dying to know, but I think we’ll have a better idea later this month,” says Rajskub of the show, which returns with a two-night premiere on Jan. 17-18. “If the numbers are exceptional, there’s a really good chance we’ll do another year. I think we need at least another year, but there are so many factors that go into it.”

The biggest factor is ratings, so stay tuned to see how 24 does after the first month of its last season.  And keep in mind: Jack Bauer has begun to look old.  Really old.  Does it make sense for a 45-year-old man to continue performing his physically demanding federal agent job at such a high level at such an advanced age?

‘Lost’ was most pirated show of season

The most interesting thing about the transition of TV from the TV set to computer, in my opinion, is the amount of revenue each network loses because of piracy.  And the other part of the equation that’s fascinating is how much money networks make from piracy (Heroes has an amazing Internet following, which is a big reason NBC continues to keep it on its schedule).

With this in mind, the statistics for most pirated TV shows came out on May 22.  Here they are.

1. “Lost”
2. “Prison Break”
3. “24″
4. “Desperate Housewives”
5. “House, M.D.”
6. “Smallville”
7. “Grey’s Anatomy”
8. “Family Guy”
9. “Fringe”
10. “The Big Bang Theory”
As you can see from the statistics, Fox is clearly the most popular network among pirates who are likely in other countries.  What that means outside of piracy is something that no one has figured out yet.  Specifically, what’s the value of a strong illegal viewership versus putting a show on Hulu (like NBC does)?

president obama’s speech to change your tv schedule tonight

President Barack Obama will give his first live Presidential address tonight, which one would have to think would be more of what he’s been saying over the past couple weeks.  The economy is bad and his administration is going to try to fix it.   The country needs patience, and, well, you get the idea.

What the primetime address means is that shows that typically air at 7:00 p.m. CT will be moved.

Here’s what’s going to happen, via the fayobserver.com

ABC: “The Bachelor” will move to 9 p.m. “True Beauty” will air instead Tuesday at 10 p.m.

NBC: “Chuck,” originally scheduled for 8 p.m., will air later in the month. The rest of the night is as scheduled.

CBS: “The Big Bang Theory” will move to 9:30 p.m. “How I Met Your Mother” at 8:30 p.m. will be a repeat, not a new episode.

Fox: The speech is pre-empting “House” at 8 p.m. “24” will air as scheduled at 9 p.m.

Enjoy tonight’s TV.
