Avatar repeated as the box office champion for the second week in a row last week, knocking off Sherlock Holmes, Alvin and the Chipmunks and It’s Complicated.
James Cameron’s epic pic made $75.6 million last week, barely falling to its previous week’s total ($77.4 million). It took down Sherlock Holmes, which made $65,380,000 in its opening week. That’s a fantastic number, but one has to wonder how much Holmes would have made if the juggernaut that is Avatar.
The most impressive thing about Avatar‘s performance at the box office is that it will likely stay at the top for some time.
There aren’t any major releases this week, so Avatar figures to repeat at the box office this week and it probably won’t fall until Denzel Washington’s The Book of Eli comes out on January 15th. That’s a solid month on top of the box office, something New Moon didn’t even accomplish.
