christopher nolan signs on for new sci-fi film

Bad news, Batman fans.

Christopher Nolan, who you certainly know as the director of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, has signed on to direct a new sci-fi project.  He will direct the futuristic Inception before a potential sequel to The Dark Knight.

Inception is based off a script that Nolan wrote by himself, and it is scheduled to start shooting this summer and be released in 2010.

But this shouldn’t worry Batman fans, considering that Nolan directed The Prestige between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. There was a three-year lay-off between those two films, and their figures to be three years between TDK and the third installment in Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

Sorry.

yeah, so the cast for the new batman film has been announced

British tabloid The Sun is reporting that Eddie Murphy and Shia Labeouf have been added to the cast of the third Batman film.

“Chris wasn’t sure if he wanted to do another movie but as soon as he decided to, he got the wheels in motion,” a source said to the tabloid. “Eddie’s a fantastic addition. Everyone’s excited to see what he does as the Riddler.”

Except, here’s the thing.

The Sun is full of crap.  Christopher Nolan is notoriously closed-mouth about casting decisions, and all that I’ve been hearing about the film revolves around Johnny Depp playing the Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman coming aboard as the Penguin.

Now, I’m not saying that will happen, but I doubt that Nolan is looking to add Robin to his cast.  I really do.  Because every time I’ve seen Robin, I’ve personally hated him because he’s a weak character with a poor back story.

And Nolan seems more interested in the darker side of Batman’s story – something that Heath Ledger captured perfectly.  With Nolan’s foresight to cast Ledger – not that big of a name, but a very talented actor – one would have to figure he casts based on potential for the role that he has drawn up, and not just big name box office draws like Labeouf and Murphy.

After all, the Batman franchise itself will always be popular as long as the director is making quality films.  There isn’t a need for a big box office draw.

With all of this being said, Murphy would be a really interesting choice for a  part in the film.  I’m a big fan of his comedy – which is utterly profane – and I want to see him take on a challenging role that puts him outside of his comedic comfort zone.

Who do you want to see in the new Batman movie?  Someone else besides those listed in this report, or do you want a little more Robin in your life?

dark knight sets dvd sales record

Who saw this coming?

The Dark Knight - which is now the the second highest grossing film of all time - broke the record for most DVD sales ever when it sold 3 million copies in its first three days in the United States, Canada and England.

The amazing thing about this figure is that, according to Warner Bros. Vice President Rob Sanders, the high-definition DVD sales are higher than Warner Bros. expected.

“It’s encouraging,” Sanders said in a press release. “The Blu-ray (high definition) sales of Dark Knight were exceptionally strong and much higher than our projections.”

I guess that The Dark Knight - starring Christian Bale as Batman and Heath Ledger as the menacing Joker – is the perfect movie to buy in high definition.  Especially when you consider that it was mostly shot in Chicago and Hong Kong, two absolutely stunning cities.

Actually, the heads of the studio announced that they plan to re-release The Dark Knight in theaters on Jan. 23 today as well.  They will do this for two reasons.

The first is to build Oscar buzz for those up for the awards – most notably Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Actor.  The second is to eclipse a billion dollars grossed internationally.  TDK is currently stuck at $996 million.
