Surf Zombies new CD is perfect soundtrack for summer

Surf Zombies will celebrate the release of their newest CD "Lust for Rust" with a release party on Saturday (6/16).

Surf Zombies keep coming back, this time fulfilling their need for speed with “Lust for Rust.”

The third CD from this Cedar Rapids fearless foursome is the perfect soundtrack for a pool party, backyard barbecue or any summer soiree that needs a little revving up. Imagine Johnny Depp’s band of bony pirates hanging 10, then hopping into their convertibles to peel out and breeze down the beachy back roads.

The beauty of the 19 cuts on this all-instrumental disc is the seamless way each song weaves into the next. The styles undulate with the tides and appeal not only to those of us who grew up with the Beach Boys but to the inky generation, as well, given a nod with “Tattoo Pin Up Girl.”

The opening strums from Brook Hoover on ”Torque Fest” set the tone for an otherworldy ride that rolls through the groovy ’60s Frankie and Annette vibe of “The Flerk” and into the psychedelic groove of  ”Do the Lurp,” the shagadelic spy sounds of “Road Trippin’” and the creepy slow dance of “Blue Velvet Flashback” for undead earth angels.

“The PBR Strut” will have you doin’ the hand jive while Beethoven rolls over in “Shag the Drag.” “The Hillbilly Beast” unleashes a Southern zombie invasion, followed a few tracks later by the menacing “Never Kill an Ape” and its speedier cousin, “Boss 302.” The sparkly “Rust Colored Leisure Suit” brings it all home in a mirror ball swirl.

Drummer Tyler Russell, bass player Joel McDowell and smokin’ hot guitarists Brook Hoover and Ian Williams will unleash their creations on an unsuspecting world Saturday night at CSPS in Cedar Rapids.

CD REVIEW: Schmidt weaves poetry through fine guitar on ‘Silt’

Iowa City troubadour Ben Schmidt has captured the flavor of love and loss, floods and keepsakes and hummingbirds in “Silt.”

This eclectic collection is fueled by Schmidt’s strong poetic voice and stellar guitar playing, which runs the gamut from rootsy fingerpicking to a Spanish flair on “Virgin.”

The title track showcases Schmidt’s fine, low gravely vocals and nice guitar work with a hook that stays with you long after the song is through: “At the end of the day we are silt and sediment / a dirt line to remind us where we’ve been. … I long to be gone with the water.”

“Cigar Box” turns the mood to a lighter shade with a country flavor and a plucky tempo as he sings of a woman who keeps all her treasures in a see-gar box. You just have to smile.

The tone turns somber again with “Neglect,” an especially poetic song hammering home lyrics about storms in the Heartland. “Ruby Slippers” slips into the wonders of Oz as the music continues drawing rich and vibrant character studies. “Tripwire” tells the most interesting story layered over innovative rhythms, followed by “One Piece Pajamas,” an in-your-face, coming-of-age look at the results of careless, carefree sex. It would be funny if it weren’t so sad and true. “Raccoon Girl” paints such a vivid picture you feel you know this mysterious woman intimately.

“No Explanation” kicks the tempo up a few notches as it skitters over love’s muddy track before “Rain” falls peacefully to bring the journey full circle.

Schmidt’s voice is a powerful, lovely talent in the rich tapestry of Eastern Iowa artists. Hear him Saturday night at CSPS in Cedar Rapids.
