go (to your couch and) see ‘grey gardans’

Because of my various writing jobs, I read a lot of movie reviews and TV recaps and one of the most well-reviewed movies of 2009 is Grey Gardens, which will premiere Sunday night on HBO and then be replayed throughout the spring.

The movie’s set-up is different from any I’ve seen.  It stars Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange as an eccentric (tremendous understatement) mother-daughter combination featured in a 1976 documentary.  Gardens doesn’t just re-hash the movie, but explores some of the things that we didn’t see and provides more depth to the critically-acclaimed doc. Moreover, it explores the relationship between a controlling mother and her daughter, which seems to be a theme that continues to be very relevant as we creep towards 2010.

Before the movie has even premiered, the LA Times is already asking who, between Barrymore and Lange, are more likely to receive the Emmy for Best Actor in a Made For TV Movie.

Give Grey Gardans a chance and let us know what you think.

your weekly box office results

With its star-studded cast and romantic comedy potential, He’s Just Not That Into You topped this weekend’s box office by pulling in $27.5 million.  It took the top of the box office from Liam Neeson’s Taken.

In my opinion, the cast and the comprehensive marketing of the film put it over the top.  I mean, just look at the following names in the movie: Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Connelly, Kevin Connolly, Scarlett Johansson, Bradley Cooper, Ginnifer Goodwin and Justin Long.  I probably missed someone, but that is a monster cast.

For He’s Just Not That Into You‘s relationship-intensive genre, that cast is like the Nicholson-DiCaprio-Wahlberg-Damon-Sheen-Baldwin cast on The Departed.  So don’t be too shocked by HJNTIY‘s performance this weekend.

The thing that surprised me about this weekend’s box office was the strong performance from Taken, which took down $20.3 million.  I’ve heard nothing but good things about the movie – Liam Neeson allegedly punches every person in the movie, besides his wife and daughters, three times in the head.  Which is gold in my book.

But is Liam Neeson still a box office action star?  I didn’t think so, but it appears I’m wrong.

That’s the movie out right now that I really want to see.

barrymore has crush on christian bale

While promoting her new film, He’s Just Not That Into You, Drew Barrymore admitted that she has had a 20-year crush on The Dark Knight star Christian Bale.

Which, on any other day, would be fine.  You know?  But yesterday, some audio leaked of a 4-minute Bale tirade directed at the Director of Photography on the set of Terminator Salvation. (If you haven’t heard it, head on over to here, but plug in your headphones, because the language is filthy.)

So I found the news of Barrymore’s love of Christian Bale kind of funny.

“He’s so cute. And I knew him when he was a kid. He was in Empire of the Sun. If he walked into the room now, I would totally clam up. Or I might go overboard and embarrass myself.”

The thing about Christian Bale is that this instance was probably a once-a-year type of thing.  Just one of those days, I suspect.  But now he’s getting roasted in the media, and because of things like YouTube and embedding video in blogs, his tirade will never disappear.

Which is too bad, because Bale is a really good actor.  But good for writers because it’s out-of-the-ordinary material that everybody seemingly wants to hear.

charlies angels 3 is reportedly a go

Nine years ago, Drew Barrymore’s production company Flower Films adapted popular 1970s TV show Charlie’s Angels into a movie.  The film, which starred Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu as the crime-fighting threesome, was a big hit at the box office.

Big enough to make a sequel (which was pretty terrible).

Now, nine years later, Barrymore has said that her production company is in the process of creating a third film in the franchise.  Barrymore says that she, Liu and Diaz will all be back while doing press for He’s Just Not That Into You.  But they are also looking for a fourth lady to add to help them fight crime, according to EOnline.com.

Stay tuned for more information.
