Monthly dinners at Croissant du Jour

dujour

Not only do they have the best pastries I’ve ever had, but their monthly gourmet prix fixe dinners are to die
for. Whenever I think of the best times I’ve had with friends in the area, I almost always think of my time there celebrating with a bottle of wine and a great meal. YUM!

Hmmm, I see a trend here.  I love hanging out downtown over a cocktail at these two establishments. I enjoy the quiet and elegant ambiance, which is perfect after a night of high adrenaline performance.

The Pedestrian Mall, Iowa City

Spending an afternoon sipping coffee, reading a book while people watching on the Pedestrian Mall is one of my favorite pastimes. It’s a place where crowds of all stripes come together — intellectuals, artists and artisans, students, professionals and laborers. It’s an exciting soup of energy that makes this area special.

Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Kernels

roughriders

As a Canadian ex-patriot, I need to have my hockey fix. Ah the smell of ice and the sound of a clean body check — music to my ears! Always a great night out and the speed and skill level is very high. It’s a taste of home right here in Iowa. Of course the beer and hot dogs at Veterans Memorial Stadium for a Kernels baseball game are the makings of one of my favorite local experiences as well. Nothing can beat a baseball game under the spring sun in Iowa.

Arts and Culture
Nothing frustrates me more when I hear people say there is nothing to do here. NONSENSE! Whether it’s music (of course I’m biased towards Orchestra Iowa), the visual arts with so many amazing museums up and down the Corridor, or the great theater performances throughout the area, one could spend every night of the week experiencing something new and special. Coming from several larger cities, I’ve found that the access and quality of the arts here can equal and in many ways exceed those from larger centers. I’m proud to be living in an area that is so much more than just a 9-to-5 place to hang your hat. It’s more of a 24-7 place to live.

Fill Her Up: Cedar Rapids Kernels $2 Tuesdays

NEW VETERANS STADIUMThe place: Kernels’ $2 Tuesdays

The bill: $8, $2 each hot dog, peanuts, nachos and a pop

The verdict: A homerun

“Batter up!” Do not miss this fastball.

I discovered this food find on the Kernels website and I am on deck to see what deals I can get on a budget and hope I do not strike out!

Summer is just around the corner and the weather is getting warmer everyday. It is always a plus to get outside and enjoy the sun. At the stadium on the southwest side in Cedar Rapids, it is fun to come support and cheer on the Kernels baseball team.

When you first walk into the stadium you are greeted by the aroma of the grill which immediately makes you hungry! This year the Kernels have great deals and have a new value menu. An all beef hot dog slider, hamburger slider, chicken nuggets and mini cookies are just $2 each. Chips and candy are just $1 each.

With my $10 budget I could choose from a variety of things to fill up on.

At every Tuesday home Kernels game, in addition to the new value menu, you can also get regular hot dogs, peanuts and nachos for $2 each! You can even wash it down with a pop, bottled water or 12 oz. beer for $2 each as well.

Some ballpark food is part of the fun of going to a baseball game.

There are other things to choose from as well at the stadium. You can choose to go to the grill located by the front entrance gate which also has yummy choices to fill up on. Their menu consists of grilled chicken sandwiches, foot-long hot dogs, brats, etc. Also excellent choices.

Other deals at the Kernels games are “Thirsty Thursdays” with $1.50 12 oz. draft beers all night or every Friday home games, enjoy 16 oz. draft beer for just $1 for one hour after the gates open. The price goes up to $2 for the second hour and $3 for the third hour and returning to full price after the third hour.

KERNELS PEANUTS“Buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks!”

With these deals, mix it up and get creative, satisfy any hungry or thirsty craving you may have. Kernels stadium is a great food find for filling up on a reasonable budget and getting to enjoy a baseball game outside as well!

This deal is a definite homerun!

Happy Eating,
Britt

P.S. Come join the Hoopla crew take advantage of the value specials and support the Kernels at the Veterans Memorial Stadium Tuesday June 9!
