get with the program!

Have you ever wondered how to go about getting involved with nonprofit organizations? Looking for the background info on what it takes to serve on a board of directors for a local organization?

Well Get on Boards has your answers. Get on Boards offers concrete strategies to becoming an effective board member and tips on being selected for board membership in the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City Corridor.

This training event specifically geared to college students and young professionals takes place this Thursday, November 6th at Kirkwood Community College in Iowa Hall.

The event kicks off with a Board Fair with Nonprofit Agencies from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. You’ll have the chance to visit with at least 15 nonprofit organizations and learn how to get involved. The Board Fair is free and open to the public.

The Board Basic Workshop—the meat of the program, if you will—starts at 6:00 p.m. and runs until 8:30 p.m. General issues in Board governance, along with understanding Board member roles regarding fiduciary responsibility, strategic planning, and fundraising for nonprofits will all be covered during interactive and interesting presentations by local experts.

The cost to participate in the workshop is $15, or $10 if you are a member of one of the sponsoring organizations (see below) or only $5 if you are a college student. Plus dinner is included! Space is limited in the workshop, so make your reservation today by visiting www.access-iowa.org.

Get on Boards is sponsored by Access Iowa, Kirkwood Community College, Leadership for Five Seasons, the Linn County Nonprofit Resource Center, Mount Mercy College SIFE, and the United Way of East Central Iowa Young Leaders Society.
