Steffany Patch, 20, Iowa City
Bartender @ Pints
How long have you been a bartender at Pints?
Since we opened, so about 3 months. Before that I bartended at another bar for 9 months.
What’s the best thing about working at Pints?
Probably my co-workers and my boss. We just have a lot of fun when we work, and it’s really laid back.
You have 20 specialty drafts on tap: Which one is the best?
That’s a tough one. I don’t know. My favorite is probably Blue Moon.
Pints is a BOYF bar — what does that mean?
BYOF is bring your own food. We have menus from all the local restaurants in here, and probably about half of them will deliver to the bar. They have their cards on the tables with their phone numbers.
What foods do you see a lot of at Pints?
Panchero’s and Buffalo Wild Wings and just like all the different pizza places.
What’s the best pick-up line you’ve heard while working?
(Laughs.) Um, I don’t know. Last night I had some guy tell me, “You look like a hot 17 year old.” That’s not the best one. That’s kind of creepy. I walked away.
Do you get a lot of that as a bartender?
Oh yeah.
What’s the best strategy for dealing with it?
Just laugh it off. You can’t be offended by anything.
There are lot of bars in downtown Iowa City — what draws people to Pints?
I think a lot of people come in because of the bartenders. A lot of the bartenders worked at other bars before, so they have old customers that come in here to see them. A lot of people have become friends with my boss and they come in for him.
So is it one of those bars where everybody knows your name?
Yeah, definitely.
