Monthly dinners at Croissant du Jour

dujour

Not only do they have the best pastries I’ve ever had, but their monthly gourmet prix fixe dinners are to die
for. Whenever I think of the best times I’ve had with friends in the area, I almost always think of my time there celebrating with a bottle of wine and a great meal. YUM!

Post concert drinks at Zins and Blend
Hmmm, I see a trend here.  I love hanging out downtown over a cocktail at these two establishments. I enjoy the quiet and elegant ambiance, which is perfect after a night of high adrenaline performance.

The Pedestrian Mall, Iowa City

pedmall

Spending an afternoon sipping coffee, reading a book while people watching on the Pedestrian Mall is one of my favorite pastimes. It’s a place where crowds of all stripes come together — intellectuals, artists and artisans, students, professionals and laborers. It’s an exciting soup of energy that makes this area special.

Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Kernels

roughriders

As a Canadian ex-patriot, I need to have my hockey fix. Ah the smell of ice and the sound of a clean body check — music to my ears! Always a great night out and the speed and skill level is very high. It’s a taste of home right here in Iowa. Of course the beer and hot dogs at Veterans Memorial Stadium for a Kernels baseball game are the makings of one of my favorite local experiences as well. Nothing can beat a baseball game under the spring sun in Iowa.

Arts and Culture
Nothing frustrates me more when I hear people say there is nothing to do here. NONSENSE! Whether it’s music (of course I’m biased towards Orchestra Iowa), the visual arts with so many amazing museums up and down the Corridor, or the great theater performances throughout the area, one could spend every night of the week experiencing something new and special. Coming from several larger cities, I’ve found that the access and quality of the arts here can equal and in many ways exceed those from larger centers. I’m proud to be living in an area that is so much more than just a 9-to-5 place to hang your hat. It’s more of a 24-7 place to live.

Happy birthday to me

zins1I recently celebrated my birthday and my good friend, Mandy, was so kind as to meet me in downtown Cedar Rapids for dinner. They say age is just a number and when you’ve reached 32, they’re pretty much right. Talk about the most boring age ever. You’ve moved beyond the dread and excitement of turning 30 and have a long ways to go before achieving cougar-status at 40.

I find it’s best to pass the time by eating really good food. Zins is a great place to do just that. The concept of Zins is one I wholeheartedly adore. They are a small plate restaurant, which means appetizers, entrees and desserts are served in bite-sized portions. You’re encouraged to try a little bit of everything. And when something as decadent as Pan-Seared Sea Bass is only $12, how could you not?

The menu is vast and eclectic and they break it into categories that direct you where to start and how to end. Mandy chose to “Nibble” on some barbecue ribs for starters while I chose to “Begin” with the crab cake. Her ribs were presented in a tidy little stack with Napa cabbage slaw on the side. My crab cake was heavenly. Some places tend to over-season their crab cakes or fry them into oily little masses. This one honored the freshness of the lump crab and kept the flavors focused.

Once we devoured our appetizers we moved on to our entree. I chose a 4-ounce bacon wrapped beef tenderloin and Mandy had the macaroni and cheese.

My beef tenderloin was not quite as outstanding as the crab cake. It was overly seared on the outside but was cooked well on the inside. There wasn’t a ton of flavor to the beef, but that’s the beauty of having small portions. You can try a bit of everything and find the best on the menu.

Dessert is the best thing at Zins. Each one is only $2, so there’s really no excuse to not order them all. Alas, my stomach was about at its breaking point so I only had two. My cherry tart was OK, a little lacking in pizazz, but the chocolate bread pudding was amazing.

The presentation of the food is lovely with very attentive service and the atmosphere at Zins is upscale yet comfortable. The owner made it a point to approach every table and ask how our meal was going. Typically I’m not a fan of this, but he was very pleasant and not obnoxious about it at all.

As far as birthday dinners go, this one was a hit. And I’ve got lots of time to keep sampling until I get to the exciting age of 33.

Zins reopening today (June 11) at 4:15

Zins Restaurant re-opens at exact anniversary of closure

When Zins Restaurant was forced by rising floodwaters to close at 4:15 p.m. on June 11, 2008, owners Amy Wyss and Lee Belfield had no idea when they would reopen.

It turns out the answer is exactly one year later – to the minute.

A tablecloth from Zins in downtown Cedar Rapids shows evidence of the place setting that remained on the table as floodwaters overtook the restaurant last week. Photographed by Liz Martin of The Gazette on Tuesday, June 17, 2008.

At 4:15 PM today (June 11) the Zins Restaurant flag will fly above the entrance again, symbolizing the reopening of the restaurant to the public, with a new full menu and wine selection. Zins is known for its small plate menu; their wine storage system (Oz Winebar) that allows for more wines to be purchased by the glass or flights; and for a philosophy of hospitality and service unparalleled in the area.

“When we closed, we had no idea what the damages would amount to or how we would surmount the challenges the flood brought,” says Belfield. “And while we never imagined the extent of the damage, we also could not have imaged the extent of the help we have gotten from our friends and supporters in this remarkable community.”

The restaurant will be open for dinner this evening, Friday and Saturday evenings and for brunch on Sunday. Full, regular hours, including lunch, will begin Tuesday June 16. Reservations are available at 319-363-ZINS (9467).

Unusual artwork unveiled this evening

Shortly after the re-opening at 4:15, artifact-turned-artwork will be unveiled that symbolizes the sudden devastation the restaurant experienced. The public is invited to attend the unveiling of this piece.
